Unemployment in the UK at an all-time low - get your latest UK recruitment news here
While other major European economies are flat, the UK economy continues to steam along with unemployment in the UK running at an incredibly low 4.5%. The key is really to make the most of your experience by getting in touch with agencies who can really help before you land at Heathrow! Register with agencies now
Remember: Letting us know your arrival dates, securing your Work Visa and uploading your CV are the keys to your success.
Technical jobs
One of the best indicators of a healthy employment market is the strong demand in professions like Architecture. The flow-on effect to Planning, Engineering and Construction will continue for many years, fuelled further by the London 2012 Olympics.
Planners: Due to changes in the supply agreements, planners will find it a lot easier to find employment outside of London. (For more information, please see the last issue of the e-newsletter)
Alert: Anyone with tunnelling experience?! – London has begun a huge project and you are needed here now!
Medical jobs
In the Medical field a huge range of opportunities exist, the likes of which we have not seen before. Sonographers, Radiographers, Audiologists, Nurses and OTs seem to be the flavour of this month but all specialists with two years or more experience in the Medical field will do well.
Legal, Accounting and Banking jobs
In Law, Accounting and Banking, people with experience in the support roles for these professions can pick and choose. Commercial Lawyers and Accountants with just a year or two top tier experience will find practically unlimited opportunities in London. The UK is also known to be an excellent remunerator for these areas with many recruiters actively advertising and recruiting in North America, New Zealand and Australia.
Education
Secondary and Primary teachers can find work easily in Contract roles, but those seeking longer term permanent roles need to start thinking about September when the new school year starts. Now is a good time to apply to agencies. Register with agencies at least six months before you arrive so they can assist you with the various bit of documentation!
Hospitality and Office Temps
For those of you are looking to find some quick, short-term work – What are you waiting for? There has never been a better time. As always travellers are well-regarded and employment is easy to find. Start applying directly to jobs two weeks before you arrive so that you can start arranging interviews (and keep continuously applying until you are employed!)

Skills shortage in UK construction industry
A recent survey has confirmed there is a massive skills shortage in the UK construction industry.
The Chartered Institute of Building's (CIOB) annual skills shortage survey has revealed that 77% of employers who responded to the survey had problems recruiting during 2006.
The demand for skilled workers in the construction industry is set to increase this year and recruiters are struggling to find workers to fill positions. Recruitment difficulties were reported at all levels in the industry but the greatest problems were reported at both management and at craft/trade levels.

To register with Construction Recruiters in the UK, visit our Register with Agencies page.

IT salaries in the UK on the rise
The market for experienced IT professionals in the UK is booming, meaning that employers will pay top dollar for candidates with the right skills.

IT employers in the UK are struggling to find suitable workers to fill the many positions on offer. A survey by recruitment company JSA has indicated that companies using freelance IT staff may find themselves under pressure to pay more because of the huge demand for contractors.
The survey also found that the IT contractors expect their pay to rise by an average of 10 percent in 2007. Around 40 percent of those surveyed believed that the IT contractor market would grow in 2007.
The IT skills most in demand are Java J2EE, VB.Net, C#, LAMP Technologies and data-warehousing. So if you're an experienced IT professional, jump on the plane!

Updated guidance notes and FAQs for HSMP applicants
Need to know more about the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme? The guidance notes and FAQs on the Working in the UK website have been updated with further clarification of existing guidance to provide customers with help in making their HSMP application.
If you are doing your own HSMP visa application, you should consult the FAQs on the website as well as the guidance notes. The FAQs are updated with the latest information on questions being raised by applicants. They will help in completing your application form correctly and providing the required evidence.

This update of the FAQs provides further clarification on the following:
• What is a tax return?
• I have not got a tax return to cover the full period – what can I do? (for salaried earnings, contractors and self-employed)
• What is an independent contractor?
• What are overseas earnings?
For more information about the HSMP and to read the updated FAQs, visit the Working in the UK website here.
Our WORKgateways HSMP experts can provide you with advice on our member forum - so why not visit and ask a question?

Everyone needs a bank account!

It is notoriously difficult for working travellers to open bank accounts once they get to the UK – mainly because when you first arrive you do not have the required documentation, such as UK utility bills in your name.
Organising a bank account before you get to the UK is cheap and easy, and WORKgateways can help you pick the right package for you.
E-mail WORKgateways to find out about the Bank Account Kickstart Package from 1st Contact or Visa First or read about the different bank account options here

How can WORKgateways help you?

One of the main things we try to do at WORKgateways is keep as much employment industry information 'on tap' as possible. so that anyone can work out where their experience is most suitable. Just as importantly, we also provide the tools to make it happen.
On the website start here, you should start by checking out industries here
The information here is kind of generic, but for most people it is all you will need to get going!
We tend to follow industry trends through this newsletter and the best way we do that is through interviewing travellers and recruiters on the front line in the UK. Read some past interviews from newsletters here to get you inspired.
If you have a specific question the best way to get it handled quickly by people who are specialists is through our forum, Ask a question now
Educating yourself is great but there is nothing like putting your CV in front of a recruiter or employer and having a plane ticket and a work visa. We provide two main ways to doing this:
For professions you can register with the best agencies in your field before you arrive - Ideally at least a few month before you arrive, but many leave it until they get to the UK which works OK to but it is nice to have interviews arranged for your arrival! Professionals can also apply to specific jobs.
If you arriving in the UK in the next two weeks, start applying directly to jobs on our website. Do a job search now!

Find out about Tranzfers - our international money transfer partner

If you plan on doing multiple international money transfers while you are in the UK, it's a good idea to set up an account with an online money transfer company such as our recommended partner, Tranzfers.
Doing international money transfers via mainstream banks can be hideously expensive and often you will have no control over the exchange rate you are getting. Especially at times like these when the Pound Sterling is very strong, it's a huge advantage to be able to have control over exactly when you want your money to be transferred.
With Tranzfers, you can deposit your money into their account and let them know exactly when you want them to transfer your cash - preferably at a time when you will get more pounds for your dollars. Their fees are really cheap too - only $15AU per transfer. Bargain!

És az új hírek...

Welcome

March has sneaked up on us already and for those planning trips to the UK this year, departure dates are looming. This month we've got some great advice for people planning their working holidays as well as some recruitment news and thousands of jobs for travellers already in the UK

There's also important news this month about making your home election vote count as a traveller in the UK. And don't forget to enter this month's competition - a handy guide from Lonely Planet bursting with ideas for how to spend your days off in the UK.

What’s new

Scottish job market growing in the UK

Most working travellers venture down the well-trodden path to London. The great news is though that there are fantastic opportunities to be had in other places such as Scotland, where a new report shows that wages and salaries are on the rise.

A Labour Market report recently released from the Bank of Scotland shows that demand for staff in Scotland is firm and that wages and salaries continue to rise.

The healthy job market makes major cities in Scotland, such as Glasgow and Edinburgh, attractive destinations for working travellers. The labour market report shows that demand is strongest for permanent IT and computing staff and temporary accounts and financial workers.

Tim Crawford, Group Economist at Bank of Scotland, said: “Latest survey data show that demand for staff in Scotland remained strong at the start of 2007. Salaries rose further in January, as firms looked to attract staff in a tight labour market. Overall, the Scottish jobs market is growing at a similar rate to the UK market, while Glasgow is the best performer at a local level.”

Sydney to London by bus

The news is spreading through email forwards and the occasional travel article, but if you haven’t heard about it already, find out here about the latest unique way of travelling between the UK and Australia.

Whether you’re an environmentalist or an intrepid traveller looking for adventure, travelling between London to Sydney just got a lot more exciting. A bus operator is offering a new 12-week journey from London to Sydney, with the first trip leaving in September.

The bus trip will take you through 20 countries including Austria, Bulgaria, Pakistan, Nepal and East Timor, and will set you back £3750 GBP ($AU 3995). A ship will take the bus from East Timor to Darwin, while passengers are expected to fly that leg of the trip at an additional cost.

Once in Australia, the journey takes in Adelaide and Melbourne before arriving in its final destination of Sydney.

The service was set up by traveller Mark Creasey, who says it is a more environmentally-friendly way to cross the globe.

"Folks that are signing up are not necessarily there for the destination, but for the experience and the people," he said.

Vote from afar - make your opinion count

With a NSW state election this month and an Australian federal election around the corner, Australians in the UK are reminded that they can still make their vote count.

Living in the UK as an Australian does not mean you have to forfeit your right to have your voice heard. The NSW state election will be held on Saturday, 24 March and NSW residents in the UK are being encouraged to head to the polls. For up-to-date news on the election and to download voting forms, visit the NSW Electoral Commission website. The Consular Office in Australia House will also be offering pre-poll and postal voting services from 14-22 March. Visit the Australian High Commission website for more information.

The next Australian federal election is expected to be held on a Saturday late this year. The Australian Labour Party is in full-swing assault mode with polls showing John Howard's popularity is waning. Visit the embassy website later this year to find out how to make your vote count.

Know before you go – insider advice from WORKgateways staff and members

In February our WORKgateways staff spent a lot of time speaking with WORKgateways members who are due to arrive in the UK within the next few months. Here is some of the valuable information we found out.

Deciding to make the leap and move to the UK is no easy decision. While years ago backpacked antipodeans tended to arrive blindly at Heathrow hoping for the best, it’s great to see that things have changed. Many Australians, Kiwis, Saffas and other WORKgateways members are avoiding the stress of ill-planned trips and are taking more time to do their research in advance, use the resources on offer and ensure their arrival in the UK goes smoothly. It’s not geeky, it’s just sensible!

The mantra for many seems to be: “I want to get as much stuff done before I get there as possible”. The great news is that there are a lot of resources out there to help you, including WORKgateways. Of course you need to get your visa sorted out first. Read the info on our site here and if you need help you may like to consult a visa representative or our forum. Most people know that it’s a great idea to set up a bank account before you leave you home country, as if you leave it until you get here you will find yourself waiting up to three months for a limited privilege account. We have found two of the best bank account start up packages on offer – find out about how to open a UK bank account here.

A lot of people we spoke to didn’t know anything about the National Insurance Number, which is a must for anyone who will be working in the UK (it is similar to a tax file number in Australia). It is very important to get your NI number sorted out as soon as possible before you start working in the UK, as if you do not have one you will be taxed at a higher rate. Find out more about the UK National Insurance Number here

Of course one of the main things everyone wants to know about is how to get a job in the UK. Alison, an Australian looking for UK engineering jobs, registered with recruitment agencies via WORKgateways and soon after had contact with a UK recruiter. “WORKgateways is one of the most informative sites I have found and is really easy to navigate,” she said. For candidates looking for professional roles, registering with agencies in your field via our site and applying to jobs soon before you are due to arrive, is the best way to secure employment. You should read the profiles of the recruitment agencies on our site to find the agencies best suited to your experience. For those looking for casual/temp work, you should only start applying to jobs a couple of weeks before you are due to arrive.

The golden rule of finding a UK job is to be persistent. Register with at least three UK recruitment agencies, and make sure they have your updated CV and travel details. When you register with UK agencies via WORKgateways, we send your CV to the agencies you have selected and they should get in touch if you are suitable. Sometimes candidates are missed out though, and it is important to follow up on your applications.

Paul, a construction professional from South Australia, told us: “I registered with a couple of agencies on WORKgateways back in December, even though I am not due to arrive in the UK until May this year. I hadn’t heard from any of the agencies, so I sent a polite email reminding them that I am due to arrive in May, and now they are working on finding a job for me.”

Find out more about more about using UK recruitment agencies and how WORKgateways can help you here.

Latest financial update from Tranzfers

The Australian dollar - The Aussie dollar has made a recovery following a reprieve for global stock markets. Despite a brief slump to 0.7680 in early Asia, the AUD made steady gains to the overnight high of 0.7554. The Aussie is currently valued at 0.7761. After the RBA’s announcement that they were not increasing interest rates, the GBP/AUD has eased and is now changing hands around 2.4837.

The New Zealand dollar - Despite the gains against the US dollar, sterling was also unable to keep pace with the Kiwi dollar with small losses seeing the cross open at 2.8280 (GBP/NZD). The GBP/NZD cross sits around 2.8244 at the moment. .

To tide you over we've got some great events coming up for Spring and the opportunity to not only win another fab Lonely Planet guide, but £100 in flight vouchers! Check out our new site Jobaroo, and find out how to win below.

There's also news about the controversial rise in visa fees and some promising news about the UK recruitment market.

What’s new

Spring has sprung in the UK

Here are some events coming up this month in the UK to put some spring into your step!

The Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race – There’s no better excuse for drinking beer out of a plastic cups by the river. Join the thousands of revellers who turn out on the banks of the Thames between Putney and Hammersmith bridges for the race, while millions more tune in on TV and radio. Get there early to nab the best viewing spot.

The Grand National – One of the world’s greatest and most dangerous steeplechase races (that’s a horse race where they have to jump over stuff for the novices) is to be held in Liverpool on the 14 April. There’s all the fashion and fun typical of horse racing carnivals and the whole of the UK stops to watch the race and try their luck at the bookies.

ANZAC Day & SA Freedom Day events – These are important events for Australians, Kiwis and South Africans living in London. There will be three ANZAC memorials held at various times in London. Visit ANZAC Day in the UK for more info. For more info about events and news surrounding SA Freedom Day, visit South Africa Times.

Hike in visa fees upsets travellers

The costs for many UK visas, including the popular Working Holiday Visa and the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme, significantly increased on the 1st of April.

The rise in UK visa prices has shocked travellers all over the world, who will now have to start saving a little bit earlier to afford the hike in costs. The price of UK working holiday visas, Ancestry Visas and Entry Clearance for Work Permits and the Highly Skilled Migrant Visa, has risen to £200 ($520 AUD/$620 NZD).

UKVisas says the reason for the rise in costs is to increase the competitiveness of the UK as a destination for travel, trade, migration and investment, to improve customer service and to prevent immigration abuse. Working travellers are less than impressed however.

Richard, 27, from New Zealand, says: “To charge £200 for a WHV is going against the spirit of the visa. The WHV is designed for young people who have an active interest in travelling and the culture of the country they are travelling to, so making it cost-restrictive seems very mean-spirited. £200 translate to a significant investment for Aussies and Kiwis.”

Kate, 26, from Australia says: “I was shocked to hear of the increase. To more than double the cost of the visa seems grossly unfair.”

To read more about the reasons for the new fees, visit the Ukvisas site

Pru's BIG OE: Rise in costs of UK visas - what do you think?

UK survey reveals - it's a candidates market

Skills shortages in the UK mean employers are desperate for qualified workers and job opportunities abound for experienced candidates.

The survey of more than 1,800 UK employers by the UK recruitment firm Manpower, showed that about four in ten UK employers are struggling to fill positions.

The skills shortages mean that more and more employers are looking outside the UK and to working travellers to fill roles. The survey revealed that the candidates most in demand are skilled manual workers, administrative assistants and PAs, engineers and sales representatives.

WORKgateways currently has over 10,000 positions in the UK requiring the right candidates. Apply to jobs in the UK now or register with agencies in your field.

Making the switch - Working Holidaymaker to Highly Skilled Migrant

Rebecca, 28, an Australian living in London on a Working Holiday Visa, has just been granted her Highly Skilled Migrant Visa. Here she speaks to us about the process and gives some advice for others considering the HSMP.

Q. How did you find out you qualified for the HSMP visa?
A. I found out that I qualified mainly through the Working in the UK website [link] and from reading information on websites such as WORKgateways. I also e-mailed a visa representative/agency as a secondary measure and they wrote back saying I had a high chance of obtaining my visa.

Q. Did you use an agency to help you with your application?
A. No. The new form is actually quite easy to fill in and i was just hoping that it would go through. I couldn’t really afford the cost of an agency either.

Q. How much did it cost?
A. The Highly Skilled Migrant Visa itself costs £315, and then because I am already within the UK in another immigration category (the Working Holiday Visa), I now have to pay £330 for Leave to Remain. If I was applying from outside the UK, I would have to apply for Entry Clearance, which costs £200.

Q. Was it very difficult to apply? What kinds of documents did you need?
A. It wasn’t very difficult to apply for - I had heard that under the old rules the application was quite tedious! I needed to provide my original Master’s degree certificate, my Bachelor degree certificate, as well as a letter from my university to say that my degrees were taught wholly in English. This was to prove that I had a good grasp of the English language (I have met several South Africans who had to sit a English test to prove their level of English as some of their degree was taught in Afrikaans). I also had to provide my payslips from the last 12 months, my income tax return and my original birth certificate to prove how old I am.

Q. How long did it take? At what stage of your current visa did you apply for the HSMP?
A. Once i sent it off, I received notification of my payment within about two weeks as well as an application reference number, and then I received my acceptance after about five weeks. I have nine months left on my Working Holiday Visa - however i could no longer work as I had already worked for a year of the two years.

Q. Any advice you would give people thinking about applying for the HSMP?
A. Just make sure you have all the information they need, go through the form and the guidance notes many times with a fine tooth comb - or even get someone to check it for you - because the process can become quite laborious if you have missed something. And it is always helpful to ask either someone who has been through the process or a visa representative to help initially with the assessment to make sure that you are eligible.

Our WORKgateways HSMP experts can also help you with any questions you have on our Forum.

Financial update from Tranzfers - our international money transfer partner

If you plan on doing multiple international money transfers while you are in the UK, it's a good idea to set up an account with an online money transfer company such as our recommended partner, Tranzfers. This month they have given us the latest financial news.

The Australian dollar - Continued demand for the Australian dollar has seen it reach levels not experienced in over 10 years of trading against the U.S dollar, exchanging near 82 cents this week. The rise has been attributed to a number of factors with the main one being expectations of more interest rate rises in Oz during 2007. Obviously a good rate for those travellers from Australia but not so good if you are looking to convert Pounds back into Aussie dollars with the rate dropping over the last month from above 2.5 to hit a low of 2.4250.

The New Zealand dollar - The Kiwi dollar has also gained considerable ground over the last month to climb from 0.6830 to exchange near 0.7250 against the U.S dollar. The strength in the Kiwi has seen the cross rate drop almost 5% from its highs near 2.8600 earlier in the month to a low of 2.7300 Pounds per Kiwi.
